Conductivity Our conductivity cells are available as conventional contacting cells and Electrodeless sometimes called Torroidal or Inductive cells, we are regularly asked what the difference is and which is the best to use. The conventional contacting cell has 2 or more electrodes (depending upon the cell constant) which come into contact with the solution to measure the electrical resistance. If the solution is dirty, has a high solids content, contains fat, grease or oil, these may coat the electrodes and give unusually low erroneous readings generally lower than the true conductivity. Contacting cells are fine for solutions which are clean and usually with low conductivities. Electrodeless cells have two coils, (a transmit and a receive coil) placed close together with a hollow centre for the solution to flow through. The solution becomes in effect the plates of a transformer, the higher the conductivity the greater the induced current from one coil to the other, hence inductive conductivity. Electrodeless conductivity works best on solutions with higher conductivities. As there is no contact with the solution the cell is not affected by a high solids content, fat, grease or oil that may coat the cell, there must however be a free passage through the cell. Electrodeless cells work well when measuring the solution strength of dilute acid and alkalis etc. Dip Cells Our dip conductivity cells are compatible with many other manufacturers' instruments which use 2 electrode cells with constants of 0.1, 1.0 or 10.0 where the cell is fitted with auto temperature compensation the value and/or type of temperature compensator used must be advised. Automatic temperature compensation:- The conductivity of a solution varies with temperature the change for towns tap water supply is around 2% per degree centigrade, so a change of 10°C in the solution temperature will make a 20% change in the conductivity reading. It is usual to base conductivity readings to a standard temperature, ie; all the readings are corrected to the reading that would be obtained if the solution was at that temperature. The international standard is usually 25°C although 20°C is used in some UK industries, this is referred to as the base temperature. Most instruments have the automatic temperature slope fixed at 2%/°C to a base of 25°C. For those customers who require greater accuracy our model C7685 conductivity controller has adjustable slope coefficient and base temperature, there is also a version with the special auto temperature compensation for ultra pure water with readout in either conductivity or MΩ. -Txx option for auto temp comp add the value required after the T, ie; -T10k for a 10 NTC thermistor Accessories Our insertion cell may be installed for inline use by fitting the cell into a flow cell.
